Then, in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II rode into Constantinople and converted it into a mosque — a transformation that made it one of the most layered and complex buildings in history. Byzantine mosaics beneath Ottoman calligraphy. A dome that seemed impossible to those who first saw it rise. A structure that has belonged to two great civilizations and witnessed the turning of the world.
